"ALRIGHT!! And now, here he is! The hardest working man in show business! The man that brought you such hits as: 'Last Train to Potsville', and 'I'm a Deceiver'; Columbia Pictures and Screen Gems are proud to present his royal magesty, MICKY JAMES BROWN DOLENZ!" announced Mike as he introduced Micky at a '67 concert. Over the years Micky sure has proved himself in show business, and in other arts. He's an accomplished actor, singer, director, writer and painter. What, you didn't know he was a painter? Well, read on!
On March 8, 1945 George Michael Dolenz was born in Los Angeles, California. Micky's parents were George and Janelle Dolenz. George was an accomplished actor and Janelle had starred in a few movies as well. When Micky was 6 years old he auditioned for a movie that was to be called "The Rings Around Saturn". He won the part, but the movie never even began production and he was released from his contract. He did some comercials after that until 1955 when he auditioned for "Circus Boy". (See The Official Circus Boy Homepage for more info on this show -- authorized by Micky Dolenz!)
Micky won the leading role of Corky Wallace on the series. "Circus Boy" was sold to NBC and was on TV until 1958, when the show was cancelled. In 1964 Micky joined with a group of his friends to make the rock group Micky and the One-Nighters. In 1965 they changed their name to the Missing Links. Unfortunatly, at this time the other band members figured they could get by without Micky and they fired him. Shortly after this Micky's agent arranged for Micky to go to a private audition for "The Monkees".
In 1967, while The Monkees were touring in England, Micky met a young lady named Samantha Juste. He fell madly in love with her and they formed a close relationship, though it remained "just good friends" in the eyes of the millions of teen fans. Samantha moved to California to be with Micky and in 1968 they were married. Micky and Samantha had a daughter, Ami Bluebell Dolenz who was born on January 8th, 1969 (approx. nine months after they were married). After The Monkees Micky did voice-overs for cartoons including "Scooby Doo" and "The Funky Phantom". He also auditioned for the role of the Fonz on "Happy Days", but didn't succeed. In 1974 (75?) Samantha divorced Micky.
In 1976, Micky re-joined Davy, Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart to create Dolenz, Jones, Boyce & Hart. They did extensive touring and released an album before parting and going their own ways. Sometime after that he and Davy starred together in a musical version of "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer". Micky played Huck Finn and Davy played Tom. Micky eventually moved to England where he became an accomplished director. Over the years he has directed such television shows as:
During the 80's Micky married Trina Dow. With Trina he had three more daughters: Charlotte Janelle Dolenz, Emily Clair Dolenz, and Georgia Rose Dolenz. Charlotte was born August 8th, 1981, Emily was born July 25th, 1983 and Georgia was born September 3rd, 1984.
Over the years Micky has guest-starred on many television shows, including "Acting Crazy" in 1994, a Canadian game show filmed in Vancouver, BC for BCTV. He also starred in "Grease" on Broadway. And of course, he's been very active with The Monkees in recent years.
Micky has released a solo album on Kid Rhino called "Micky Dolenz Puts You To Sleep" and has another solo album out called "Broadway Micky". He has also released his autobiography, "I'm a Believer". He has returned to University to study science (he is very interested in such things) and has taken up painting. His most famous artwork is entitled the Oh-No Zone and is being sold in prints. All of his artwork has been touring various museums and Micky himself has been known to attend these showings. Micky was doing the voice of Arthur in "The Tick" in the first season, but had to give that up when he re-joined the Monkees for touring.
